FEW TIPS ON HOW TO TACKLE SHYNESS IN A SOCIAL GATHERING

Have you ever been to a gathering where you get to be meeting people there for the first time?
You usually get this shy feeling where people mistake for humility, “she’s the quiet type” they say to each other when the truth is you just feel you are not fitting in. Meanwhile there are other people who would fit into this kind of environment very easily, usually the extroverts, well good for them. If you have found yourself in this situation before, this article is for you.
How can this shy feeling in a first time meeting be prevented?
Shyness has more to do with being uncomfortable with one’s self especially when around other people.
Excessive negative self-preoccupation is when you are too aware of the things you are doing wrong when you are around other people.
Here are few tips that would work:
1. Focus outwards away from your shyness. Shyness makes one to be so absorbed in one’s self. Its not about suddenly thinking that you are great but forgetting yourself and focusing outwards. Ask questions that can start a conversation eg. ask people present how they knew each other…
2. Send the right signals. Most people view shy people as unfriendly, aloof or stuck up. The wrong signal is being sent out. The easiest way to correct this is by smiling to people. People who smile are always very attractive.
3. Do not run from uncomfortable situations. When embarrassing situations present themselves do not run from it, instead face it and try not to freak out. When you run from embarrassing situations, you are reinforcing shyness.
4. Stop labelling yourself. Why say you are shy? You are a great person, you are beautiful! Just leave it there!!
5. Focus on the moment. Becoming too mindful of what is happening around you will take focus away from yourself. When in a social gathering focus more on the discussion going on than on yourself.
